The concept of Iqāmah (establishment) is among the most pivotal terms within the Qur'anic epistemic framework, representing a transition from formal, individual religiosity toward structured, institutionalized, and civilization-oriented faith. This research seeks to comprehensively uncover and model the semantic constituents of Iqāmah through structural semantics. All seventy occurrences of the root, across various verbal and nominal forms, have been analyzed along both syntagmatic and paradigmatic axes, with attention to complementary, intensifying, and contrastive relations.
Syntagmatic analysis demonstrates that the predominance of imperative moods and plural subjects—encompassing both the collective body of believers and prophetic leadership—establishes Iqāmah as a communal obligation and governance-centered project. Its effectiveness culminates in "empowerment on earth" (tamakkun fī l-arḍ). Moreover, collocation with eight distinct objects—prayer, conduct, the Divine Book, religion, economic measure, divine bounds, testimony, and boundary—attests to its comprehensive nature, covering spiritual, intellectual, legal, economic, and cultural dimensions.
On the paradigmatic axis, intensifying synonyms such as faith, reverence, charity, sincerity, fidelity, and adherence reveal an organic linkage between spirituality and structural justice. Conversely, opposition to terms like neglect, laziness, distraction, division, transgression, loss, and collapse underscores its preservative function.
The findings establish that Iqāmah, in the logic of revelation, is fundamentally distinct from mere "action" or "recitation." It signifies the comprehensive establishment, actualization, and sovereign enactment of divine norms within individual and social relations. Ultimately, Iqāmah aims at steering society toward optimal functional integrity and the fullest realization of both material and spiritual abundance.
