The chasm between ethical speech and practical conduct is a perennial issue. Verse 44 of Sūrat al-Baqarah starkly confronts this duality. This study, grounded in the verse’s internal structure and the exegetical tradition, employs semantic analysis to examine its three core concepts: “enjoining good,” “forgetting the self,” and “reciting the Scripture.” It argues that “forgetting the self” denotes not passive lapse but conscious disregard of one’s moral knowledge—an insight that bridges to the psychological concept of cognitive dissonance (Aronson, Batson). The paper further outlines the ramifications of this split across individual, relational, and institutional spheres, culminating in the Quranic criterion of “existential coherence” for aligning knowledge, speech, and action.
