One of the hadith books belonging to the middle period of Shia history reports that Talheh was called ill-omened by Imam Ali (pbuh) when coming to allegiance with the Imam. The present study seeks to evaluate this news with the focus on the ominousness of people from the perspectives of the Qur’an, the prophet and Muslim scholars. The historical factors of this news will be also analyzed as side points of the allegiance with the Imam. To this end, the teachings of those religious sources regarding the main and side points of the news are collected, and the authenticity of each point is evaluated with those teachings. In this regard, careful analyses are conducted of five Qur’anic verses, three sets of precepts about calling something or someone ill-omened, and the opinions of six Shia scholars. In the next step, the news is dated, the narrating source is examined, and the historical reports about the manner of Talheh’s allegiance as well as what happened there are investigated. The results of the study show that the reported event is of no validity on the basis of the applied religious criteria.
