A set of hadiths that inhibit arbitrary interpretation have made controversies as whether or not the Qur’an is understandable for common people. The present study uses a descriptive-analytical method to address the shortcomings in the attribution of these hadiths by cons and pros. It also emphasizes the denotation of the hadiths and criticizes the outlooks of both groups. Then, it introduces a meaning which is based on the Qur’anic verses and hadiths but free from the mentioned shortcomings. As the results of the study indicate, mistaking interpretation for the comprehension of the Qur’an and vice versa is what has induced the difference of opinions about the hadiths. This is because such hadiths do not concern the possibility or impossibility of comprehending the Qur’an; rather, they are about interpretation, which basically differs from comprehension. The hadiths, indeed, serve to elaborate on the Qur’anic verses. They also imply that interpretation is not a human act; it is just God who knows what the verses really mean, while the addressees are obliged to think about, delve into and figure out what they read. Moreover, there is some evidence that the act of interpreting the Qur’an is conceded to the prophet (pbuh) and Imams.
