The semantics of the Quran is an effective method for a deeper understanding of the meanings of its words. Accordingly, this article examines the word "taswīl" in the Quran using a semantic approach, emphasizing a Structuralist Approach. In this study, the various meanings of this word in lexicons are first analyzed, and based on this, the concept of "relaxation" is selected as a more appropriate explanation for "taswīl", derived from the root "sawala". Equating "taswīl" with "adornment" in some interpretations and lexicons may be influenced by the meaning of "sawl" as "desire and request". Structural analysis reveals that "nafs" (the self) and "Satan" are in a syntagmatic relationship with"taswīl", while "imlā’" (respite) is in an intensification relationship. Among these, "nafs" is its most frequent collocate. Additionally, the words "tatwī‘" (persuasion), "waswasa" (whispering), and "tazyīn" (embellishment)** are in a paradigmatic relationship with "taswīl", exhibiting relative synonymy and sharing a common semantic field that involves motivating one to commit a wrongful act and reducing inner resistance to it. In the hierarchy of meaning, "waswasa" represents the initial stage, "tazyīn" the highest level of motivation, while "taswīl" and "tatwī‘" fall in between. The unique semantic component of "taswīl" is minimizing the severity of sin and making a grave misdeed appear insignificant, distinguishing it from its synonymous counterparts.
