Although numerous studies have been conducted so far on the actions and views of Imam Ali (pbuh) in confronting the Khawarij, analyzing his theological themes with the aim of “preventing the emergence of this sect” is still a research necessity. The main issue of the present article is to achieve the “speech pattern” of Imam Ali in the period before this movement was identified as “Kharijites”. This article, using the interdisciplinary method of “thematic content analysis”, seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of this speech pattern by extracting and logically organizing his sayings. Accordingly, first, by citing Nahj al-Balagha and reliable historical sources, all of the Imam’s statements addressed to this movement were collected, from the first sparks of rebellion to accept arbitration until their initial repentance. In the next step, using the thematic content analysis method, the main and secondary themes of these sayings were extracted.
The research findings, which are the result of examining eight sermons and conversations, were categorized into five general themes. Data analysis shows that 52% of the content of these themes focuses on informing the Khawarij about their strengths and weaknesses and explaining the alignment of true friends and enemies. The remaining %48 focuses on strengthening their combative insight, learning lessons to prevent repeated breaches of the treaty, and conditional agreement with some demands, with the aim of maximum absorption and reducing the consequences of their rebellion. The final five categories extracted from the qualitative tables actually outline the pattern of Imam Ali's guiding speech to prevent the formation of the Khawarij sect.
