The aim of this study is to analyze the content of the narrations transmitted by Asmā’ bint ʿUmays as found in both Sunni and Shiʿi sources. The outcome of this research sheds light on her intellectual concerns over nearly half a century during the formative period of Islam. To achieve this, all of her narrations—amounting to 48—recorded in sources from both traditions were collected. Employing both quantitative and qualitative content analysis methods, the narrations were classified and categorized to identify concept-forming keywords.
The results, in addition to enumerating the narrations, identifying the transmitters and their sources, and distinguishing between main and subsidiary themes, demonstrate that Asmā’ bint ʿUmays' primary focus was on theological matters—especially the articulation of the virtues and merits (faḍāʾil wa manāqib) of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them), with particular emphasis on the virtues of ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (a) and Fāṭima al-Zahrāʾ (s). She also addressed essential rulings pertaining to women. These emphases can be traced back to her intellectual orientation shaped by the teachings of Imam ʿAlī (a), her close association with the Ahl al-Bayt, the practical needs of women in understanding religious rulings, and the theological perspectives of both Shiʿi and Sunni compilers of Hadith.
