Abstract

Contemplating the meaning and reaching the significations of a literary work through the signs in its textual surface structure has always been one of the major concerns of literary critics from the past to the present. Discourse analysis, with its various approaches, branches and perspectives, seeks to unravel the mutual relationship between language and society, essentially probing the ideology governing texts. Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) theory is a renowned theory in discourse studies, aiming to examine the dominant power in the society where the literary work is produced by exploring the relationship between the internal and external criteria of the text through three levels: description, interpretation, and explanation. Accordingly, the present study seeks to analyze the story of the Virgin Mary (pbuh) based on Fairclough's critical discourse theory and a descriptive-analytical method at its three levels. The findings of the research indicate that there is an integral connection between the language, and the social and external context of the story of the Virgin Mary (pbuh) in the Holy Quran, which adds significant value to the Quranic narrative from both a textual and ideological perspective.
