Abstract

Verse 43 of Surah An-Nisa, considering that it contains the jurisprudential ruling prohibiting the drinking of alcohol, has been of particular interest to Islamic commentators and scholars. The status of revelations for this verse has been narrated in various ways in the Sunni books of narration. The narrations of the status of revelation mentioned below the verse show that the verse was revealed following an incident, and that incident was the drinking of alcohol by some of the companions of the Prophet (PBUH), especially Imam Ali (AS). Since the content of such narrations undermines the infallibility of Imam Ali (AS), it provides the necessity of analyzing, examining, and dating them. In this article, the evolution and historical origin of these narrations are examined and determined using the combined dating method of documents and text. The information is collected in a library manner and their examination is descriptive-analytical. The results of dating based on this method, by processing similar texts and categorizing them, drawing a chain of transmissions, and determining the main and secondary common links, showed that Ata ibn Sa'ib is the main common link of this group of narrations, and the second half of the second century, i.e., the lifetime of Ata ibn Sa'ib, can be dated as the formation of this hadith.
