Abstract
The term “the Holy Spirit” is repeated four times in the Holy Quran. It is found in the form of an addition with an adjective. One case is found as a formal addition. It can be concluded that syntactic combinations that have an additional relationship may have instantial commonalities, but they are different in terms of meaning. Therefore, the “the Holy Spirit” cases cannot be considered to be denotatively the same in the Quran.
By carefully examining the two verbs “ayyadna” and “nazzal” that come before “the Holy Spirit”, it can be inferred that both are used in the context of action. “Ayyadna” conveys the meaning of “multiplication” in the context of action and is transitive with the letter “ba”, which means ‘with the help of. The commentators have had various interpretations of the combination of “the Holy Spirit”, such as “Gabriel”, “the Spirit of God”, meaning Jesus (peace be upon him), “the Book of the Gospel”, and “one of the most excellent names of God”.
There are different views on the term “the Holy Spirit” in the context of companionship, but all of them impart no similar meanings to commentators. The only verse in which there is no disagreement among commentators is the last verse of Surah An-Nahl. There is a great deal of disagreement in the remaining verses in which the relationship between Jesus (pbuh) and the “Holy Spirit” is stated.
