Abstract

From the perspective of Hymes's "communicative competence", language is an effective sociological tool where intra-textual structures form its core components. From such a viewpoint, discursive action is central to the functions of communicative competence. Within the expanse of the Holy Quran, temporal, spatial, causative, and derivative forms of "logical metonymy" are among the high-frequency linguistic structures, playing a significant role in generating functions such as persuasion, warning, and lesson-drawing. Among them, the causative relation, with approximately 60 verses, assumes the role of a discursive behavior by adopting a realistic approach. Considering the function of language within the cultural-social context, and consequently, the critique of the externalist approach and the necessity for a structured interpretation of the Holy Quran, the present study aims to answer the question of how frequently this linguistic action engages with the functions of communicative competence and intellectual enrichment in interpretation. For this purpose, the study uses a descriptive-analytical method and the communicative competence theory of causative relations. The findings reveal that causative relation is a systematic literary structure with functions such as warning, metalinguistic, persuasive, and behavioral highlighting, indicating the authenticity of Quranic vocabulary in conveying profound concepts. A case study of the cause-and-effect variety in logical metonymy illustrates the conceptualization of value-based teachings in accordance with the socio-cultural context of the audience, demonstrating adaptability across time by anticipating various variables of human life.
