There is a wide difference between both Shiite and sunni interpreters in interpretation of the verse of Imamate of Prophet Abraham (2/124). The differences in interpretation of this verse have been expanded by theological debates and consequently it has made the semantic of the word "Imam" difficult.
The present essay mentions those theories on the meaning of Imam and refers to the sources which rejected the theories. On the other hand the essay proposes the meaning of "leadership with the necessity of following and obeying deliberately" for the word "Imam" and tries to base the view on the verses, Hadiths and contextual analysis.
