The Semantics of the Word "Taswīl" in the Holy Qur'ān with a Structuralist Approach

Abstract

A highly effective method for the deeper understanding of the meanings of Quranic words is Quranic semantics. The present study analyzes the word "Taswīl" (تسویل)in the Holy Quran using the structural semantics approach. In this research, initially, the various meanings of the word are investigated in lexicography books. Based on this review, the concept of "Istirkhā’" (laxity and lethargy) is chosen as a more suitable explanation for Taswīl derived from the three main letters of س, و, and ل. The equation of "Taswīl" with "Tazyīn" (embellishment/beautification) in some interpretations and lexical works may be influenced by the concept of "Su'al" –(request/desire). Structural analysis also reveals that "Nafs" (soul) and "Shayṭān" (Satan) are in a syntagmatic relationship (co-occurrence) with Taswīl, and "Im’lā’" (prolongation/respite) is in an intensifying relationship with it. "Nafs" is the most frequent co-occurring term. Furthermore, the words "Taṭwī‘" (making compliant), "Waswasah" (whispering/insinuation), and "Tazyīn" are in a paradigmatic relationship (substitution) with Taswīl. They exhibit a relative synonymy and are in a shared semantic field that includes motivating the performance of a wrong action or sin and reducing internal resistance to it. In the semantic hierarchy, "Waswasah" is the initial stage, "Tazyīn" represents the highest level of motivation, and "Taswīl" and "Taṭwī‘" are in the middle. The unique semantic component of Taswīl that distinguishes it from its substitutes is the minimizing of a great sin and reducing its importance.
