Terminological study of deliberation (Tadabbur) in the Quran and its comparison with discovery learning and a student-centered teaching method

Abstract

It is an essential research task to understand the nature of deliberation (Tadabbur) from the perspective of Quranic scholars, clarify its relations with related terms, and determine its conceptual boundaries. This study aims to elucidate the nature of the term “Taddabur” through etymological analysis, explain its lexical meaning, and investigate its Quranic applications and components from the viewpoint of Quranic scholars. In terms of its objective, the research is an applied type. The data are collected with a descriptive-analytical method through library sources and subsequently “testing” and “division” logical method. The research also uses comparison, adaptation, and deduction techniques. The contemplator actively engages in understanding the Quran and consciously receives God's message. The conscious understanding of the divine message is the role that God has set for the audience of His Word. A deliberative methodology for the comprehension of Quranic texts and precise references keep the contemplator actively engaged through all the stages of Taddabur, thereby invigorating them in the process. Given the universal nature of Taddabur, this method has gained popularity among those interested in Quranic understanding. Investigating the stages of two samples of Quranic deliberation reveals a complete alignment between the deliberation process and the stages of discovery learning in the inductive method, problem-solving, and storytelling.
