Content analysis of the hadiths encouraging childbearing: A case study of hadiths from the book Al-Kāfi

Abstract

One of the key factors influencing demographic changes is the increase or decrease in fertility rates. Given the population decline crisis in recent years, finding effective solutions to address this issue is essential. This study employs thematic content analysis to examine the factors influencing the population decline crisis. It focuses on fertility variables by analyzing hadiths quoted from Shia Imams. Based on the analysis of the themes extracted from those hadiths, two paradigms are identified to address population decline. The first is the cognitive domain, fostering a positive attitude toward childbearing by emphasizing themes such as love for children and highlighting the blessings of children in individual and social life. The second is the identification of the barriers to childbearing and proposing solutions, drawing on themes such as how to have children and changing negative perceptions toward childbearing. The paradigm of cultivating a positive attitude toward childbearing as the most significant factor (with a frequency of approximately 58%) plays a central role in resolving the population decline crisis. This paradigm is achieved through two key variables including positive perception of childbearing and understanding its necessity. Additionally, it is crucial to eliminate the barriers to childbearing by correcting negative attitudes, shifting materialistic perspectives to monotheistic ones, modifying consumption patterns, providing childbearing incentives, and addressing infertility factors.
