Abstract
The theory of evolution, which has become the focus of global scientists today, has raised challenges among Muslim thinkers; most Muslim scholars have found this theory incompatible with the verses of human creation, while some, by accepting this theory, have attempted to reconcile the Quranic verses with it. Ayatollah Mohammad-Taqi Mesbah-Yazdi and Ayatollah Seyed Mahmoud Taleghani are contemporary thinkers representing the first and second spectrums, respectively. This article seeks to compare the approaches of Mesbah-Yazdi and Taleghani in confronting the theory of evolution in interpreting the verses of human creation; the research method in this paper is descriptive-analytical, and the method of data collection is library research. The findings indicate that from Mesbah-Yazdi’s perspective, the apparent meanings of the Quran clearly denote the independent creation of the first human, and the theory of evolution—due to lacking necessary scientific foundations and relying on induction and conjecture—cannot be a solid basis for deviating from the apparent meanings of the Quran. In contrast, Taleghani, after accepting the theory of evolution, has attempted to reconcile it with religious perspectives by revising certain aspects of this theory and has interpreted the Quranic verses within a framework aligned with this theory. He presented an interpretation of this theory that has not been endorsed even by proponents of the theory of evolution. Furthermore, the alignment of the creation verses with this interpretation has not been approved by the majority of Muslim scholars due to non-compliance with precise exegetical standards.
