From the viewpoint of the Qur’an, man’s sa’y, or attempt, is of great importance to God, but the use of the word sa’y has not been paid due attention in research. The present study seeks to identify the semantic features and relationships of that word through the words that are collocated to it and thus analyze the meaning of the verses in which it appears. Semantic rules help to extract the intended meanings of words which, in turn, ensure the deep and accurate translation, interpretation and understanding of Qur’anic verses. As the results of the study show, the term sa’y has one denotation, but it is composed of some semantic features including being alive, use of power, movement, aim (in the case of human subjects), and intensity based on the aim and necessity. It has emerged that the Qur’an makes use of the word sa’y for both human and nonhuman beings but never for God. In nonhumans, the practice of sa’y involves movement and dynamism and is considered as a manifestation of life.
