Some Orientalists, citing certain narrations and holding a view inconsistent with the common belief of Muslims, consider 'belief in Jesus (pbuh) as the savior' to predate 'belief in Mahdi (pbuh) as the savior.' This research, aiming to examine the authenticity of these two beliefs, has collected the related narrations and, using a dating approach, divided them into two categories: 'narrations that consider the two saviors to be one' and 'narrations that emphasize their distinction.' Among the most important narrations of the second category is 'Jesus (pbuh) leading the prayer in the end times.' Some Orientalists have regarded this narration as reflecting the early Muslim view that later evolved, transferring the role of Jesus (pbuh) to Mahdi (pbuh). In dating these narrations, methods such as finding the oldest source, analyzing isnad-text, and data from non-Islamic sources have been used. The findings indicate that among the narrations in this study, 'Jesus (pbuh) following the Imam/Mahdi of the Muslims' is the only narration that may possibly be attributed to the Prophet." «عیسی(ع)» و «مهدی(ع)» دو عنوان اصلی منجی در اسلام‌اند که باور به منجی بودن هریک با روایات پشتیبانی می‌شود. برخی خاورشناسان با استناد به برخی روایات و در دیدگاهی ناسازگار با عقیدۀ رایج مسلمانان، «باور به منجی‌ بودن عیسی(ع)» را مقدم بر«باور به منجی بودن مهدی (ع)» دانسته‌‌اند. این پژوهش با هدف بررسی اصالت این دو باور، روایات مرتبط را گردآوری نموده و با رویکرد تاریخ‌گذاری به دو دسته تقسیم کرده‌است: «روایاتی که دو منجی را یکی می‌دانند» و «روایاتی که بر تمایز آن دو تأکید دارند». از مهم‌ترین روایات دسته دوم، «امامت عیسی(ع) در نماز آخرالزمان» است. برخی خاورشناسان اینگونه روایات را بازتاب دیدگاه اولیه مسلمانان دانسته اند که با گذشت زمان تغییر یافته و در آنها نقش عیسی(ع) به مهدی(ع) منتقل شده است. در تاریخ‌گذاری این روایات، از روش‌هایی چون یافتن در کهن‌ترین منبع، تحلیل‌های اسناد-متنی و داده های موجود در منابع غیراسلامی استفاده شده‌است. یافته‌ها نشان می‌دهد از میان روایات این پژوهش، «اقتدای عیسی(ع) به امام مسلمانان/مهدی» تنها روایتی‌است که احتمال انتساب آن به پیامبر وجود دارد.
